AMERICUS — Mr. Joseph Michael Smith, age 92, passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28, at Macedonia Baptist Church in Preston. The Rev. Robert Orr and the Rev. Raymond Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening, March 27, at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St., and at other times at the home of Joseph Smith Jr., 5366 E.  Centerpoint Road, Preston.

A native of Centerpoint in Webster County, Mr. Smith was born April 5, 1925, a son of the late James Conyers Smith and the late Era Alston Smith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Belle Watson Smith; by five brothers: Herbert Smith, Richard Smith, John Will Smith, Ernest Smith and Ray Smith; and by three sisters: Inez Brightwell, Margie Walker, and Verda Goodwin.

Survivors include two sons: Joseph Michael Smith Jr. (Patsy) and Ronnie Smith Sr. (Cindy); brothers and sisters: Raymond Smith (Rebecca), Dorothy Davis, Julia Key, Patricia Burks (Wayne), and Liz Guynn; grandchildren: Keith Smith (Heather), Kevin Smith (Diane), Ronnie Smith Jr. (Jeanna), Michael James Smith (Jessica), Sandy Michelle Smith, Valerie Nicole Smith, and Teresa Lynn Smith (David); 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II, Mr. Smith farmed for a number of years, and retired after 25 years from the Webster County Board of Education where he had held positions as a school bus driver and custodian.
