Lady Hurricanes Tennis Team falls to Francis Marion

AMERICUS – Though they fought as hard as they could, the GSW Women’s Tennis Team fell to Francis Marion University 9-0 on Sunday, April 1, at the GSW Tennis Complex.

The best chance for GSW to get a win in singles competition was riding on the shoulders of Southland Academy alum Kendall Crew. Crew lost the first set to Magan Head 6-4, but took Head to a tie-breaking situation in the second set. However, Head won the tie-breaker 7-5. GSW’s number one player, Celia del Castillo, lost in straight sets to Marie Krueger 6-2, 6-1.

GSW’s Maria Taboada lost to FMU’s Sofia Henning in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

The Lady Hurricanes’ Charli Allen lost to Anna Wintrich in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.  Anneliese Leahy of GSW lost to Leshika Vala 6-1, 6-0, and Francis Marion completed the singles sweep when Elisa Lang defeated GSW’s Ashley Denby 6-0, 6-3.

In doubles action, the GSW team of Celia del Castillo and Maria Taboada came close to defeating FMU’s duo of Sofia Henning and Anna Wintrich, but lost 8-6. Kendall Crew and Anneliese Leahy tried their best against the Lady Patriots’ team of Marie Krueger and Leshika Vala, but lost 8-1. Francis Marion swept the doubles competition and the team match as Magan Head and Elisa Lang defeated the Lady Hurricanes’ team of Charli Allen and Ashley Denby 8-2.

With the loss, the Lady Hurricanes are now 7-13 and 0-7 in the Peach Belt Conference. They will host an exhibition match against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) on Wednesday, April 4, at 2 p.m.
