ELLAVILLE – After they pounded Georgia Military College 18-8 in Milledgeville on Thursday, April 5, the Schley County Baseball Team took care of business early on Friday, April 6, as they scored 18 runs in the second inning to put a struggling Greenville team away early by the score of 19-0.

The Wildcats only scored one run in the first inning as Jordan Hall led off with a single. He then stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. After Chance Hollomon flew out, Camron Vanlerberghe hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hall.

However, in the bottom of the second inning, the Wildcats exploded for 18 runs on 13 hits. They also took advantage of six errors committed by Greenville. Thr Trojans committed a total of eight errors for the game.

Almost every Wildcat hitter that batted got at least one hit, scored a run and drove in an RBI. “We were able to put some good swings on some balls and build a lead there in the second inning,” Schley County head coach Chuck Cheek said.”

To begin the bottom of the second, Cameron Belcher, Dylan Taylor and Trent Bivins reached on three straight errors committed by the Patriots. Lorne Barineau then doubled, driving in two runs. Jordan Hall drove in two more runs on a double, followed by four straight RBI base hits by Wildcat hitters. Cameron Belcher was then hit by a pitch. He stole second base and would later score on an RBI double by Taylor. By this time, Coach Cheek was able to get his reserves in the ball game and give them some experience. “We were able to get some other guys in and get them some experience on the varsity level, some guys that have been working hard at practice. It was really good to get some of those guys in the lineup.” Cheek was particularly pleased with the play of Lorne Barineau. “Lorne looked great today,” Cheek said. “He was playing early, then moved to where he was pitching some. I’m trying to get him some at bats back. He did a good job today.” Cheek went on to say that his team hit some balls hard and didn’t try to do too much at the plate. He also said he has some players that are trying to heal from injuries. He was happy that they were able to leave the game early and continue the healing process.

Garrett Peavy started the game on the mound for Schley County and pitched the first two innings. Dylan Windham came on in relief to pitch the third inning. They combined to give up only one hit, one walk and five strikeouts. Peavy struck out two batters and Windham struck out three.

Due to the massive lead the Wildcats had on the Patriots, the game was run-ruled after the bottom of the third inning.

The Wildcats were due to travel to Miller County on Saturday, April 7, for a doubleheader. However, the doubleheader was canceled due to bad weather.

The Wildcats (14-2, 8-1) will resume play when they travel to Taylor County on Tuesday, April 10, for another region game against the Vikings. The last time these two teams met in Ellaville on March the 6, Schley County won 4-1. First pitch is expected to be at 5 p.m.
