GSW Men’s Tennis gets mixed results

AMERICUS – The Georgia Southwestern State University Men’s Tennis Team got mixed results in their matches against Abraham Baldwin and Brewton-Parker. The Hurricanes fell to ABAC 9-0 on Thursday, April 6, at GSW’s Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex. They rebounded, however, on Friday, April 6, by beating Brewton-Parker 9-0 at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex.

In Thursday’s match against ABAC, the Hurricanes fought extremely hard in both their singles and doubles matches. Steven Blythe, the number one player for the Hurricanes, lost a tough match to Frederic Fibleuil 6-7, 7-5 and 1-0 (10-8 tiebreaker). GSW’s A. Canovas Ferrando lost to Ferdinand Spickhoff 6-1, 7-5. Matthias Rogel of ABAC defeated Nacho Garcia de Sola of GSW 6-4, 6-1. In a hard-fought match, the Hurricanes’ Beau Millwood lost to Vitor Paulino 4-6, 6-4 and 1-0 (11-9 tiebreaker). Luke Eafano of GSW was blanked in straight sets by Lukas Zavrel 6-0, 6-0.

The Hurricanes had one last chance to get a singles victory. However, Jonathan Martin lost in another tiebreaker to Raul Rodriguez 6-3, 4-6 and 1-0 (10-5).

In doubles action, the GSW team of Steven Blythe/A. Canovas Ferrando fell in a very hard-fought encounter with the ABAC team of Fredric Fibleuil/Ferdinand Spickhoff 9-8 (7-4 tiebreaker). The team of Jonathan Martin/Nacho Garcia de Sola lost to ABAC’s duo of Matthias Rogel/Lukas Zavrel 8-3. In the final doubles match, the GSW team of Luke Eafano/Bryon Robley were blanked by Vitor Paulino/Juan Pino Contoleon 8-0.

As bad as things went for the Hurricanes on Thursday, April, 5, Friday, April 6, was a much different result against Brewton-Parker. The Hurricanes defeated the visitors from Mount Vernon, GA 9-0. Steven Blythe got things started off right when he defeated Travis McCaig 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets. A. Canovas Ferrando defeated Paul Taylor 6-1, 6-0. Beau Milwood continued the trend as he defeated Robby Mayher 6-1, 6-0. Nacho Garcia de Sola then defeated Wyatt Morris 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets. Jonathan Martin continued the Hurricanes’’ winning ways as he defeated Caleb Bellamy 6-0, 6-0. The Hurricanes completed the singles competition as Justin Ralston beat Malik Hollis 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles action, the GSW team of Steven Blythe/A. Canovas Ferrando defeated Travis McCaig/Branden Lewis 8-1. Jonathan Martin/Nacho Garcia de Sola defeated Wyatt Morris/Robby Mayher 8-1, and the GSW doubles team of Beau Millwood and Luke Eafano capped off the team victory as they defeated Paul Taylor/Caleb Bellamy 8-0.

The Hurricanes hope to build on the win against Brewton-Parker when they take on West Alabama at Columbus State on Monday, April 9. The first serve begins at 2 p.m.
