Schley County girls and boys track & field teams win region meet

FITZGERALD – For the second year in a row, the Schley County boys track & field team won the Region 4-1A Meet. For the first time since 2005, the Schley County girls team won the Region 4-1A Meet on Wednesday, April 11, at Fitzgerald High School.

The Lady Wildcats finished with a total of 147 points, 30 points ahead of second place Marion County (117). The boys team finished with a total of 161 points, 15 points ahead of second place Macon County (145).

Several individuals on both teams turned in outstanding performances to make it possible for both teams to win. In the Girls 400 Meter Dash Finals, Tamia Kelley finished in second place with a time of 1:06.06, just a little more than two seconds behind Nuriyah Slaton of Greenville. In the finals of the Girls 800 Meter Run, Carmen Philips finished in first place with a time of 2:45.86. Philips also won the Girls 1600 Meter Run with a time of 5:56.96. In the finals of the Girls 3200 Meters, Morgan Bradshaw finished in fourth place with a time of 16:51.49. In the finals of the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles, Schley County’s Nyiah Kelley won the event with a time of 18.20. Her teammate, Megan Harris, finished in third place with a time of 18.98. Kelley also won the 300 Meter Hurdles competition, finishing with a time of 53.74. Harris also finished in third place in this event with a time of 56.06.

In the Lady Wildcats kept racking up points on their way to winning the meet. The took first place in the 4×100 Meter Relays with a time of 51.58. The Lady Wildcats did the same thing in the Girls 4×400 Meter Relay, winning the event in a time of 4:27.05.

In the Girls High Jump competition, Dasani Minter and Tamia Kelley tied for fourth place. They both jumped a height of 15-02.50.

The Lady Wildcats took first place in the Girls Triple Jump. Carmen Philips won the event, jumping a distance of 32-08.00. Tamia Kelley finished in third place in the event, jumping a distance of 30-03.75. In the Girls Pole Vault competition, Nyiah Kelley finished in first place with a height of 5-06.00. In the Girls Discus finals, Schley County’s Rene Rix finished in third place, throwing a distance of 88-06.50. Her teammate, Jade Ellinson, finished in eighth place with a distance of 69-01.50. Finally, in the Girls Shot Put competition, Faith Harbuck and Aukeviah Thornton finished in seventh and ninth place respectively. Harbuck threw a distance of 26-09.50, while Thornton threw for a distance of 24-02.00.

As far as the Schley County boys were concerned, they were able to duplicate what they did a year ago: win the Region 4-1A Meet. In the Boys 200 Meter Dash finals, Jackson Fulks finished in second place with a time of 23.31. His teammate, Dartavious Napper, finished in ninth place with a time of 24.18. In the finals of the Boys 400 Meter Dash, Noah Hammons finished in sixth place with a time of 56.06. His teammate, Tra Sampson, finished in eighth place with a time of 56.14.

In the Boys 800 Meter Run, Hammons and Aaron Pinckard finished in second and third place respectively. Hammons ran a time of 2:19.62 and Pinckard finished right behind him, running the race in a time of 2:21.84. Schley County took first and second place in the finals of the Boys 1600 Meters. Pinckard took first place with a time of 5:16.69, and Austin Anthony took second place with a time of 5:26.02. In the finals of the Boys 3200 Meters, the Wildcats took first and second place as well. Anthony finished in first with a time of 12:02.26, and his teammate, Peter Horton, finished in second with a time of 12:26.80.

n the finals of the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles, Landon Dailey finished in third place with a time of 17.41. His teammate, Trent Davis, finished in fifth place with a time of 19.45. Schley County took home first place in the Boys 300 Meter Hurdles as Davis won that event in a time of 43.35. Landon Dailey finished in third place in the event, running in a time of 45.26.

The Wildcats won the 4×100 Meter Relay event in a time of 43.57. They came in second place in the 4×400 Meter Relay event with a time of 3:48.59.

The boys team did well in the field events as well. Zamon Ross and Dartavious Napper finished in fifth and sixth place respectively in the Boys High Jump competition. Ross jumped a height of 5-10.00 and Napper jumped a height of 5-06.00.

In the Long Jump competition, Jackson Fulks took third place with a distance jump of 21-02.50. His teammate, Trent Davis, finished in ninth place, jumping a distance of 18-08.50. Fulks also did well in the Boys Triple Jump competition, finishing in second place with a distance jump of 41-03.00. His teammate, Jakim Williamson, finished in fifth place with a distance jump of 38-04.00.

There were only two competitors in the finals of the Boys Pole Vault competition, and they were both from Schley County. Peyton Register and Landon Dailey both vaulted a height of 9-06.00. In the Boys Discus competition, Schley County’s Jakobi Thornton finished in third place with a distance of 127-00.50. His teammate, Wade Rodgers, finished in ninth place, throwing a distance of 99-10.00. In the Shot-Put competition, Gage Hart and Wayde Montgomery finished in eighth and ninth place respectively. Hart threw a distance of 39-00.50, while Montgomery was right behind him, throwing a distance of 39-00.00.

Overall, it was a great day for the Schley County Track & Field Program. Both teams will now move on to the GHSA Class A State Meet.
