GSW Men’s Tennis ends regular season with win over Montreat College

AMERICUS – The Georgia Southwestern State University Men’s Tennis Team ended its regular season on a positive note by beating Montreat College 6-3 on Saturday, April 14, at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex.

Steven Blythe got things started off right when he defeated Leopoldo Lucero in strtaight sets 6-1, 6-2. A. Canovas Ferrando followed that up with a win over Jacob Summerville in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Beau Millwood continued the Hurricanes’ good fortune by beating Jackson Plyler 6-3, 6-3. The first loss for the Hurricanes came when Montreat’s Ben Cree defeated Nacho Garcia de Sola in a hard-fought match. Garcia de Sola won the first set 6-2, but Cree won the second set 7-5, forcing a third and deciding set. Cree won that set in a tiebreaker 1-0 (10-7).

Jonathan Martin got the Hurricanes back on track by defeating Lorward Choi 6-4, 6-1.

Justin Ralston fell to Montreat’s Anh Hoang 7-6, 6-2, but the Hurricanes emerged from singles play with a 4-2 lead.

In doubles action, the Hurricanes team of Steven Blythe/A. Canovas Ferrando defeated the Cavaliers’ duo of Leopoldo Lucero/Enrique Smalley 8-2. Jonathan Martin and Nacho Garcia de Sola defeated the Montreat duo of Lorward Choi and David Garcia 8-1. The only doubles blemish for the Hurricanes came in the final doubles match as the Montreat team of Ben Cree/Anh Hoang defeated Beau Millwood/Justin Ralston in a tiebreaker 9-8 (9-7). Having defeated Augusta University in a home match 5-4 on Friday, April 13, the Hurricanes finish the regular season with two straight wins.
