Three Americus-Sumter track and field athletes qualify for state meet

COLUMBUS – Three Americus-Sumter boys track and field athletes: Keyvontay Nelson, Jaylen Mable and Trevian Thomas all qualified for state at the 2018 Class AAAA sectional meet at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus on Saturday, April 28. The GSHA Class AAAA State Meet will be held on the campus of Berry College in Mount Berry, GA Thursday through Saturday, May 10-12.

Trevian Thomas qualified for state in the Boys 200 Meter Dash with a time of 23.01. Thomas also qualified for state in the Boys Long Jump, finishing in seventh place. He jumped a distance of 20-07.75. Thomas was barely beaten out for sixth place by Howard High School’s Jeremiah Kelly. Kelly jumped a distance of 20-08.25.

Jaylen Mable qualified for state in two events, the 800 Meter Run and the 400 Meter Dash. Mable finished in eighth place in the Boys 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:07.46. Mable was barely beaten out for seventh by Jonathan Hoek of Gilmer. Hoek ran a time of 2:07.37. Mable also finished in eighth place in the Boys 400 Meter Dash, running the event in a time of 51.36.

The third ASH athlete to qualify for the state meet was Keyvontay Nelson. Nelson qualified for state in the Boys 100 Meter Dash with a time of 11.45. His teammate, Christian Waymon, barely missed qualifying for state in the event. Waymon ran a time of 11.80

There were other ASH athletes at the sectional meet who weren’t able to qualify for state, but still performed well. Tavoris Daniels ran the 110 Meter Hurdles in a time of 16.85. Kameron Carter ran a solid time of 44.48 in the 300 Meter Hurdles.
