AMERICUS — The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation into a possible drive-by shooting in the Sunset Park area Tuesday night.

Col. Eric Bryant, Sumter County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy, told the Times-Recorder that authorities were notified of a shooting shortly after 10 p.m. on Pecan Terrace. He said an elderly woman reported having heard seven or eight gunshots. Responding deputies discovered that bullets had traveled through the walls of the woman’s home and into the bed where she had been lying. She was uninjured, however.

Bryant said that several bullet casings were found in the roadway, strewn along the length of the street. He said neighbors were being interviewed following the incident.

The colonel added that it is theorized that a shooting in the McCoy Hill area had occurred earlier in the evening, and that the Pecan Terrace incident might have been retribution. No one was injured in the city incident.

The case remains under investigation.
