AUGUSTA — Mr. Sammie Leroy Johnson Sr., 73, of 104 Pine Top Drive, Eatonton, Georgia, formerly of Americus, Georgia, departed this life Sunday, May 27, 2018, in Augusta, Georgia. Sammie was born on July 5, 1944. He was the youngest child of the late Rev. Joe S. Johnson and Bertha L. Jones Johnson.
In addition to his parents, Sammie was preceded in death by his loving sisters and brothers, Annie Ruth Jackson, Helen Hooks, Lucille Hicks, Alice Colwell, Mary Smith, Edna Barbara, Naomi Mansfield, William Johnson, Walter Johnson and Amos Johnson; and in-laws, Frank Harvey Sr., Johnny Walker, Emma Carter and Dorthory Ingram of Americus, Georgia.
He attended the public schools of Sumter County where he later graduated in 1963. At an early age, he fellowshipped at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Webster County. Sammie enjoyed fishing, working in the garden, watching wrestling, and spending time with family and friends.
He leaves to celebrate his life his wife Florine W. Johnson; their four loving children, Sammie Johnson Jr. (Patricia Johnson), Robert Johnson Sr. (Coffy Johnson), Roberta Johnson and LaShonda Swan (David Swan). He also leaves to cherish his legacy and precious memories to 10 devoted grandchildren and three great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly; two loving siblings, Bertha Paul of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Allen Johnson of East Orange, New Jersey; loving in-laws, Pearline Robinson (Ricky Robinson Sr.) of Macon, Georgia, Willie Walker (Marie), Beatrice Walker, Rosa Mae Harvey and Willie Ben Carter Sr., of Americus, Georgia; a host of nieces and nephews; three devoted nieces, Mattie, Nancy and Thelma; faithful cousin, Dorthory Johnson Thomas; and many loyal friends, including Phillip Harvey, Jack Harvey and “Blue” of Americus, Georgia, and “Doc” of Eatonton, Georgia. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Big Bethel Baptist Church, 1330 North Jackson Street, Americus, Georgia. The Rev. Calvin Rollins, pastor, and Evangelist Thedora Sneed will officiate. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery. Services entrusted to Bernard’s Family Funeral Care, LLC Eatonton, Georgia.
