AMERICUS — The Boys & Girls Club of Americus-Sumter County will honor the Leesburg Stockade Girls with an event beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at The Student Success Center at Georgia Southwestern State University.
The event, which will remember, recognize and honor the 1963 Civil Rights “sheroes,” will share the story of the group of 15 young girls, ages 12-15, from Americus who were arrested in Americus in 1963 and housed in a filthy room of the Lee County Stockade for several weeks. It is themed “Inspiring Change: Today – Yesterday – Tomorrow.”
Jody Redding, region director for the Southwest Georgia Office of U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, and Travis Love (Trap), actor, film maker and star of “Black Panther” and “The Walking Dead,” are keynote speakers.
Admission is $50 per person and sponsorship packages are available, ranging from $100 to $650 and up. All proceeds benefit The Boys & Girls Club of Americus-Sumter County.
