AMERICUS — The GREAT Summer Program, sponsored by the Americus Police Department, will conclude with a presentation of the Successful Tips for Youth on Law Enforcement Encounters (STYLE) Program and a GREAT Program Graduation Ceremony on Friday, July 13. The program begins at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude with lunch for the officers and participants at noon.
The STYLE Program is sponsored by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI, and is specifically tailored for middle and high school students, who will participate in several mock scenarios on how to engage law enforcement. These scenarios will include instructions on how to respond when approached by law enforcement officers while driving a car, on the street, or at home. The scenarios are a combination of videos, depicting the split-second decisions that officers are often required to make and role play scenarios with volunteers from local law enforcement agencies. The program will conclude with the students participating in a roundtable discussion about the day’s events over lunch with individual officers followed by a presentation of certificates to the graduates.
