Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. hosts Youth Initiatives, scholarship event

AMERICUS — In observance of “May Month,” Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. hosted its annual Youth Initiatives culminating event recognizing over 60 middle school and high school youth from Sumter, Terrell, Macon, Dooly, Webster and Lee counties on May 27 at the Clarence Jordan Center. In the presence of over 100 parents, teachers, and community supporters, The Jeanne Noble Delta Gems (comprised of high school girls), The Betty Shabazz Delta Academy (comprised of middle school girls), and EMBODI (comprised of middle and high school boys) received numerous awards for their scholastic achievements and dynamic leadership in 2017-18 school year. Inspiring presenters were Brittany James, Delta Sigma Theta sorority, and Marcus Arnett, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
The sorority’s cultural arts biennial fundraiser, “Jabberwock” winners were also recognized. In addition, seven graduating seniors registered to vote.
The 2018 Delta Scholarship recipients received an admirable reception with parents and friends on June 2 at Phoebe Sumter Wellness Facility. The recipients have all been accepted and will be attending college this fall. Each recipients received a $1,000 scholarship.
