Heat advisory in effect today

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for much of Middle Georgia south of Columbus.

The heat index is expected to rise to between 102 and 107 degrees F.,  and humidity could lead to heat illness if precautions are not taken.

Drink plenty of fluids. Stay in an air conditioned space and stay out of direct sunshine.

The elderly, the very young, and people with heart conditions and metabolic disorders are most at risk. Friends, relatives and neighbors should check on people who may be at risk.

The heat advisory is in effect from 1-7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 7.
