AMERICUS — Detectives with the Americus Police Department’s criminal investigations division continue their investigation into a shooting incident early Sunday morning in downtown Americus.
According to the incident report, police responded at 12:40 a.m. to a report of shots fired near Urban Restaurant and Lounge, 122 N. Jackson St., downtown. When officers arrived, they ascertained that the shots were actually fired near 106 N. Jackson St.
The supplemental reports state that it was first thought that a man had driven his motorcycle on the sidewalk after being told by the bar’s owner that it was time to leave. That driver was thought to have fired shots into the air.
Police contacted the Windsor Hotel to review the business’ video surveillance footage which showed a verbal altercation between the motorcycle driver and several other subjects walking on the sidewalk. The driver and another male subject were involved in a verbal exchange when the male subject walked to the rear of his vehicle, put his arm in the air and fired two gunshots before running back toward the bar. The footage showed that he tried to fire a third shot but the gun failed to fire, according to the report. The motorcycle driver drove back to the area of the bar, stopped briefly and then drove away, the report stated.
Police continue their investigation into the incident in an attempt to identify the man who fired the gun. Two .380-caliber shell casings were found near 106 N. Jackson St.
