Police chief warns of IRS scam
Ellaville Police Chief Robby Lightner said currently there is an IRS scam affecting this area. He warns local citizens not to fall victim to this scam.
He said the local police will not take warrants out on you for taxes. nor will the IRS call you demanding payments over the phone. If the IRS wants to notify you it will do so in writing and by certified mail.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be representative from the IRS, the police chief warns not to give the caller any personal information and/or any form of payment. He advises to just hang up the phone.

Connection recaps activities
John Greene, coordinator of Schley County Family Connection, gave a report on recent activities of the organization.
Family Connection distributed free school supplies to 250 students Aug. 3, the first day of school in Schley County. It also gave “Nu Hope For Ville” 50 bags of school supplies to distribute at their annual block party for youth. Family Connection purchased $1,200 in the school supplies. A special thank you goes to Schley County Department of Family and Children Services, the Schley County Community Foundation, and annual donors for making this event possible.
Heather Hathaway is the new high school sponsor for S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) for the new school year. SADD is a prevention group for grades 9-12 and is partially funded by a $5,000 grant from Flint Energies Foundation to Schley County Family Connections.
The next Schley Family Connection meeting is at noon Aug. 23 at Thomas Edwin Wall Post 191 in Ellaville.
The Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society has its annual Auction and Barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the American Legion in Ellaville. There is something new this year: special music featuring a local band, Lonesome Road Bluegrass Christian Band with entertainment from 5-7 p.m. A Car Show will be held again and will start at 4:30 p.m.
There are three raffles this year: Quilt Raffle, 50/50 Raffle and a raffle for a Ruger K 10-22 Semi-Automatic Rifle. Quilt and 50/50 Raffle tickets are available at Ellaville Floral Shop, Gill’s Drugs, and The Pizza Place, where Joey is also selling gun raffle tickets. The drawings for the raffles will be held the night of the auction.
The auctioneer will start the auction at 7 p.m. with a lot of nice items. There will be a Bake Sale as well.
The Summer Cafe was held at Schley County High School was a success again this year. The program fed approximately 200 students daily who attended academic camps and football camp during the months of June and July. The program was funded through the United Way and implemented through Feeding the Valley of Columbus.

Police chief attends training conference
As part of Ellaville Police Chief Robbie Lightner’s education and training in the administration of law enforcement, he recently attended the 2018 Annual Summer Training Conference sponsored by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police July 22015 in Savannah.
This year’s conference covered a variety of topics.
Lightner was among more than 550 heads of law enforcement agencies attending the conference.
Chief Joseph Wirthman of Jefferson Police Department, president of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, stated, “In today’s world, the criminal justice system is constantly changing with the men and women charged with leading their agencies as the executives face charging obstacles and challenges as they try to provide their communities with the best possible professional law enforcement service.”

Community saddened by loss of local businessman
Our community is very sad to have heard of the death of Bobby L. Miller. a businessman, owner of Miller’s Home and Auto.
He was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church and active in the Ellaville Lions Club.
He and his wife Helen had two children Kim and Robert. Prayers continue for his family.
