COLUMBUS – Americus-Sumter and Shaw squared off in Columbus in a double-header on Thursday, August 23. Both games went the Lady Raiders’ way. Shaw won both games by the same score of 14-1.

In Game 1, Americus-Sumter scored first in the top of the first. With two outs, DeAsia Ford bunted and reached on an error. Ali Bozeman drew a walk and Brianna Pope singled. The Lady Panthers had the bases loaded with two outs. Taylor Garcia then drew a walk to score Ford and give ASH an early 1-0 lead.

However, that lead didn’t last long. Shaw erupted for 12 runs in the bottom of the first to pretty much put the game away. Shaw had scored four runs in the first, but Americus-Sumter managed to get two outs in the inning. All they needed was one more out and they would only be trailing 4-1. However, with two outs, Shaw scored eight more runs. They scored two more in the bottom of the second to complete the 14-1 win in Game 1. Much of this was due to the fact that the Lady Panthers committed eight errors in this game.

Channing Perry led Shaw’s offensive attack as she went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Hannah Kennard went 2-for-2, scored two runs and drove in an RBI. Kennard was the starting pitcher for Shaw in Game 1. The game was run-ruled in the fourth inning. Kennard pitched all four innings and gave up one run on one hit. She walked three and struck out 10. Taylor Garcia started in the circle for Americus-Sumter. Garcia gave up 14 runs on seven hits. Only one of those runs was earned. She walked three batters and struck out none.

Game 2 was almost a carbon copy of Game 1. The Lady Raiders of Shaw scored eight runs in the second inning against the Lady Panthers. That was a big factor in Americus-Sumter dropping a 14-1 result in Game 2.

The Lady Panthers were only able to manage two hits against the Lady Raiders in this game. One of those hits came off the bat of Brianna Pope. Pope went 1-for-2 for the game and scored the team’s only run. Kristen Wooden got the other hit for Americus-Sumter. She went 1-for-1.

The game was run-ruled in the fourth inning. Taylor Garcia pitched the entire game. She gave up 14 runs on six hits. 11 of those runs were earned. Garcia walked six and struck out one.

Kristina Nguyen led Shaw’s offensive attack. She went 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in two RBIs.

While the Lady Panthers only scored one run and managed only two hits, they did a much better job of cutting down on the errors. The Lady Panthers only committed one error in Game 2.

The Lady Panthers will try to bounce back when they host Pataula Charter Academy on Monday, August 27. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
