Lady Wildcats fall to Bleckley County

COCHRAN – The Schley County Lady Wildcats softball team fell behind early and couldn’t recover as Bleckley County handed the Wildcats a 6-2 loss on Wednesday, September, 12, at Bleckley County High School.

Bleckley County left fielder Landa Dominy led the Lady Royals’ attack by going 3-for-4 at the plate and scoring two runs. The Royals used two pitchers in this game. Starting pitcher

Bailey Odom pitched the first five innings. Odom gave up one run on four hits. She walked one batter and struck out four.

Riley Edge came on in relief in the sixth inning for the Lady Royals. Edge pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on one hit and striking out two batters.

For the Lady Wildcats, they were led offensively by Landon Whaley. Whaley went 2-for-3 and scored a run.  Whaley’s sister, Saige Whaley, started in the circle for Schley County. Whaley pitched six innings. She gave up six runs on 12 hits. Four of those runs were earned. She walked two batters and struck out three.

The Lady Royals struck first in the bottom of the first as Dominy led off with a single to center field. Macey Haley then reached on an error by Schley County left fielder Nyiah Kelley. Dominy scored the first run of the game on the play, and Haley advanced to second. Bailey Odom singled on a bunt, advancing Haley to third. Elisia Vickers then singled to center field, driving in Haley to give Bleckley County a 2-0 lead.

With runners at second and third with one out, the Lady Royals added their third run of the inning. Caroline Thrower hit a sacrifice fly to center fielder Alexis Bradshaw. Courtesy runner Clara Rickerson scored to give the Lady Royals a 3-0 lead.

Schley County responded with a run in the top of the fourth. Carmen Phillips led off the inning by reaching on an error. After Nyiah Kelley hit into a fielder’s choice, Emily Campbell singled, advancing Phillips to third base. Saige Whaley then singled to score Phillips, making the score 3-1 Bleckley County. That was all the scoring Schley County could do in that inning.

The Lady Royals scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 5-1.

The Lady Wildcats scored their final run of the game in the top of the sixth. With one out, Emily Campbell singled to left field. Campbell then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Saige Whaley hit a sacrifice fly to left center field, scoring Campbell.

Bleckley County responded with another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-2 Lady Royals.

The Lady Wildcats were not able to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh, and Bleckley County won the game 6-2. The Lady Wildcats will try to rebound from the loss when they travel to Macon on Monday, September 17, to take on Mount de Sales Academy. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
