AMERICUS – The Georgia Southwestern State University Women’s Soccer Team lost a hard-fought match to Warner University by the score of 2-1 late Saturday afternoon, September 15, at Hurricane Field.

The Lady Royals got on the board early. In the sixth minute, Warner’s Samanntha Warren slid past the GSW goalkeeper and scored to give Warner an early 1-0 lead.

However, the Lady Hurricanes got the equalizer near the end of the first half. Freshman forward Emily Collum scored unassisted in the 43rd minute to tie the score at 1-1. The Warner defenders were trying to clear the ball out of their box, but Collum got on to it and was able to knock it into the back of the net.

In the second half, the Lady Royals quickly took the lead thanks to Natalia Carneiro. Carneiro scored in the 52nd minute to put her team on top again. Carneiro’s goal was assisted by Danielle Stanley.

Warner led with more shots on goal (9-7), but the Lady Hurricanes took more shots than did Warner (15-12). GSW also had more corner kicks (5-1) than did the Lady Royals.

Collum’s goal was her second goal of the season. She is tied with senior forward Ella Hawkins with the most goals scored on the team.

The Lady Hurricanes will have to rebound quickly as they begin Peach Belt Conference play. They travel to Morrow, GA to take on Clayton State on Wednesday, September 19. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
