AMERICUS — The remains found in north Americus last week may be those of a man reported missing in Florida.
The Americus Police Department had received information that the body of man reported missing from Tallahassee, Florida, might be located in a wooded area off the 900 block of Railroad Street. Authorities found skeletal remains around 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 3 Americus Office assisted in the investigation, and the GBI Crime Scene Unit recovered the remains, which were transported to the state crime lab.
Americus Police Chief Mark Scott issued a release late Monday, saying that while the skeletal remains have not yet been positively identified, they are believed to be those of Derek Levy Parks, a 32-year-old man who was reported missing from Tallahassee, Florida, in July.
The death investigation is being conducted jointly by the Americus Police Department, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Tallahassee Police Department. Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to call one of the investigating agencies.
