Lady Wildcats score seven in fourth inning to put away Manchester

MANCHESTER – After losing to Mount de Sales Academy 11-6 on Monday, September 17, the Schley County Lady Wildcats softball team rebounded nicely by winning two straight games. First, they dispatched Crawford County 10-1 in Roberta on Tuesday, September 18. Then on Thursday, September 20, they traveled to Manchester and dismantled the Lady Blue Devils 13-1.

“In both games, we started out slow, but we came on strong towards the end,” Schley County Head Coach Jody Sellars said. “We had a bunch of steals. We’ve stolen 101 bases out of 105 attempts this year. That has been a big part of our success.” Sellars went on to say that his club has two big weeks left in the season, and that they are tied atop the region with Marion County. Sellars also mentioned that the Lady Wildcats are ranked #5 in the public-School power rankings.

Against Crawford County, Schley County scored two runs in both the first and second innings. Then they scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Lady Wildcats scored 10 runs on 12 hits and committed three errors. Crawford County was held to one run on four hits. They committed two errors. Nyiah Kelley went 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in an RBI to lead Schley County’s offense. Carmen Phillips went 2-for-4 at the plate, scored a run and drove in another. Alexis Bradshaw was also hot at the plate. She went 2-for-3, scored two runs and drove in one.

Schley County starting pitcher Saige Whaley gave up only one run on four hits against Manchester. She struck out three and walked two.

Perri DeVane got the start in the circle for the Lady Wildcats. DeVane pitched four innings, giving up no runs on two hits. She walked three and struck out one. Hannah Crawford came on in relief of DeVane. Crawford pitched two innings, giving up one run on two hits. She didn’t walk anyone and she struck out two batters.

Against Manchester, the Lady Wildcats got off to a strong start, but their big inning came in the fifth. They plated seven runs that inning to put the Lady Blue Devils away 13-1. Phillips led the Lady Wildcats offensively. She went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs. Nyiah Kelley went 2-for-3, scored two runs and drove in two more. Landon Whaley also had a good day at the plate. Whaley went 2-for-3 and drove in an RBI. Phillips, along with the Whaley sisters, had doubles in this game. Emily Campbell, who went 1-for-4, had a triple. She scored two runs and drove in two RBIs.

Saige Whaley got the start in the circle for the Lady Wildcats. Whaley pitched five innings, giving up one run on four hits. She walked two batters and struck out three.

Schley County scored 13 runs on 13 hits and committed three errors. The Lady Wildcats held Manchester to one run on four hits. Schley County was able to take advantage of three errors committed by the Lady Blue Devils.

The Lady Wildcats have a busy week ahead of them. On Monday, September 24, they host a double-header against Baconton Charter. The first pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The start time for Game 2 is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The following day, they return to region play as they host Hawkinsville on Tuesday, September 25. First pitch for that game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
