Citizen’s Police Academy: The Americus Police Department presents The Citizen’s Police Academy, Tuesday and Thursday nights from Oct. 2-Nov. 13. This 12-session course is intended to give citizens an overview of basic police operations and provide a forum for discussion of current events and issues. Coffee with a Cop: Café Campesino hosts the third annual National Coffee with a Cop from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Oct. 3. Come and talk to members of the Americus Police Department, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Southwestern State University Public Safety and the Georgia State Patrol to show your support and ask questions.

Cowpoke Carnival: The Americus Junior Service League hosts the 26th annual Cowpoke Carnival from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Sumter County Fairgrounds, Ga. Highway 30 West. Tickets available from league members, Citizens Bank of Americus (premier sponsor), and Clinic Drugs. Admission is $6/advance, $8/at door. Includes $3 in tokens. Costume Contest is at 11:30 a.m. Features new games, yummy food and prizes. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Children age 2 and under admitted free. All proceeds benefit community project.

Scholarship Event: Americus Arts Council hosts Live from Americus, a music scholarship event, from 8-10:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Rylander Theatre.

ALBANY
Alzheimer’s Walk: Walk to End Alzheimer’s is Oct. 20 at the nature trails behind Modern Gas in Albany. Registration begins at 5 p.m. Nearly 350 people from the South Georgia area including Baker, Clay, Crisp, Dougherty, Early, Lee, Mitchell, Quitman, Randolph, Stewart, Sumter, Terrell, Webster and Worth counties are expected at this year’s event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Walk participants will complete a two-mile walk and will learn about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical studies enrollment and support programs and services from the Alzheimer’s Association. Walk participants will also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony. Register today. Grief Share: A support group for people dealing with grief meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Mondays of each month at First Baptist Church.

Georgia Cares: River Valley Area Agency on Aging wants you to know about GeorgiaCares, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). It helps people with questions about Medicare. You can get free one-on-one counseling to help you make informed decisions about your medical, hospital, and drug coverage. Foster Care: HOPE Foster Care, a ministry of The Methodist Home, is working to recruit and train successful foster parents in the Southwest Georgia community. May is National Foster Care Awareness month and the need for foster families is significant. There are approximately 1,000 children in foster care in our community and HOPE Foster Care is working to combat that problem by increasing the number of foster parents who feel equipped to welcome a foster child into their home. Adult Reading Skills: Adult Literacy Action Inc. has several openings for adult individuals interested in improving their reading skills. The organization is affiliated with the Lake Blackshear Regional Library. Volunteer tutors are available to work with individuals on a one-on-one basis.
