AMERICUS – The Georgia Southwestern State University Women’s Soccer Team took Francis Marion into double overtime, but the Patriots were able to score a late, game-winning goal to beat the Lady Hurricanes 2-1 on Sunday, September 30, at Hurricane Field.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, September 29. The game actually began on Saturday, and the Lady Patriots had earned a 3-1 lead by halftime. However, for the second time, the game was delayed due to lightning and postponed till Sunday.

Things started out well for GSW. In the 70th minute, GSW forward Eduarda Giusti took a corner kick and placed it in the air, allowing Brenna Mendonca to jump and head the ball into the back of the net to give GSW a 1-0 lead.

Francis Marion got the equalizer in the 87th minute. The Lady Hurricanes were whistled for a foul inside the eighteen-yard box and the Lady Patriots were awarded a penalty kick. Dayle McEwen converted the penalty, tying the game at 1-1.

Neither team could score in regulation or in the first overtime. It would take two overtimes to decide a winner. In the second overtime, FMU earned a corner kick. The ball was sent in front of the GSW goal. Both teams were scrambling for the ball. FMU’s Christina Rice took a pass from Kiley Barr and scored the game-winner.

Throughout the 107 minutes of play, FMU led both in shots (25-17) and shots on goal (18-12) over GSW. GSW falls to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the Peach Belt Conference. With the win, Francis Marion improves to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the PBC.

GSW will step out of conference when they host Shaw University for an early midweek match on Wednesday, October 3, at 1 p.m.
