ATHENS — Mildred “Millie” Louise Adams Suttles, age 85 1/2, passed away due to complications of pneumonia on Sunday, Oct. 14 at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital in Athens, Georgia. She was surrounded by family. Millie was born on April 23, 1933, in Madison, Florida, to Julius and Lillian Adams. Millie graduated from Martha Berry School for Girls (high school) in January 1951. She graduated from Georgia Southwestern College, Americus, Georgia, in June 1953, and attended Georgia State University from September 1954-1956. She met James Luther Suttles Jr. at Georgia Southwestern and they married in June 1954.

Millie and James relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, soon after graduating from college and began to raise their children, Jimmy and Nancy. They eventually settled down in a small Decatur neighborhood where they lived for more than five decades. Millie lost James, her husband of 54 years, in October 2008. Millie truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures, gardening, watching birds, and reading. She was very involved with the Women’s Ministries Disciples of Christ at the First Christian Church of Decatur where she was a member for more than 60 years and taught children’s Sunday and Bible school for 25 years. She dearly loved her church family and was very dedicated to the church. Millie was a retired DeKalb County Schools remedial teacher, a paraprofessional for 20 years.

She moved to Watkinsville, Georgia, in 2013, to live with Nancy, her daughter and Dan, her son-in-law. She is survived by Nancy and Dan; Jimmy Suttles, her son; Colby Suttles, grandson and wife Tricia, Madison and C.J., great-grandchildren; Trey Suttles, grandson and wife Lindsey, Kendall and Karson, great-grandchildren; Kay Adams, sister-in-law; and nephew Keith Adams. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Suttles and brother, Preston Adams. Other survivors include Sandra Suttles Collins, sister-in-law, and Jay Bee Collins, brother-in-law; niece Lindsey Delgado; and nephew Jason Collins. The family would like to extend our gratitude to Tammy Martin Brautigam, “adopted daughter,” Margo Schuttenberg and Nancy Morris, close friends, and Julie Yearwood, her Visiting Angel, for their love, care, and attentiveness. We all loved her greatly and will miss her every day.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at First Christian Church of Decatur, 601 W. Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur GA 30030. Reception immediately following. A graveside service will be held at Antioch Christian Church in Watkinsville later in the year. Date to be confirmed.
