GSW men’s basketball kicks off on Friday at Barton 45 Second Tournament

AMERICUS – The 2018-19 Georgia Southwestern State University men’s basketball team begins the 2018-19 season on Friday, November 9, at the Barton 45 Second Classic at Barton College in Wilson, NC.

In addition to Barton, the host team, and GSW, Augusta University and the University of Mount Olive will be competing in this tournament.

The Hurricanes will play on Friday, November 9, against Barton at 7 p.m. that game will begin after the first game between Augusta University and Mount Olive, which is scheduled to tip off at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, Georgia Southwestern State will take on the University of Mount Olive at 11 a.m., while Barton and Augusta will finish the tournament with their game at 1 p.m.

The Hurricanes return four seniors, including R.J. Sessions, who led the team in scoring with 15.3 points per game last season. Sessions was named to the Preseason All-Peach Belt Conference Team by the Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches’ poll. In addition to Session, senior Andre Statam returns. Statam was second on the team in rebounding last year. Quenten Taylor returns for his senior season. Taylor was second on the team in scoring during the 2017-18 season. Senior Devin Watson also returns for his final season as a Hurricane. Watson was second on the team in assists last season.

Georgia Southwestern State was picked to finish fifth in the PBC standings by the PBC coaches’ poll. Last year, the Hurricanes averaged 72.9 points per game, 35.6 rebounds per game and 12.9 assists per game.
