MOULTRIE — The Americus-Sumter High SkillsUSA automotive team recently traveled to Moultrie to compete in the “Georgia Skills Challenge,” a regional event where students display their skills in various technical trades. Twenty area high schools participated in the competition with more than 250 students performing various tasks in six categories: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, blueprint reading, masonry, and welding.
The Americus-Sumter High team focused on welding, with all six ASHS students competing. Representing ASHS were Caleb Beamon, Isaac Saint, Jack Hodges, Anna Saint, Caleb Wilson, and Nathan Terry — with two earning top 10 finishes: Nathan Terry and Isaac Saint. Each student to compete received a $500 scholarship to Tulsa Welding School; Terry and Saint each earned an additional $500 plus a welding helmet and a pair of safety glasses.
