Lady Jets bounce back to defeat East Florida College

AMERICUS – The South Georgia Technical College women’s basketball team rebounded nicely after an embarrassing loss to Shelton State by beating East Florida College 81-70 at the Hangar on Monday, December 31, to close out 2018 and the Lady Jets Holiday Classic.

Overall, SGTC athletic director and women’s head basketball coach James Frey was very pleased with the tournament. “There was a lot of great basketball played on our court the past three days,” Frey said. “There were eight different men’s and women’s teams from Alabama, Florida and Georgia battling each other for bragging rights.”

In the Lady Jets’ contest against EFC, they trailed 22-19 at the end of the first quarter. However, SGTC outscored the Lady Titans 17-11 in the second quarter to take a 36-33 lead at halftime.

Both teams battled each other hard in the third quarter, and EFC led the Lady Jets 44-43 by the end of the quarter. However, SGTC rallied in the final frame, outscoring the Lady Titans 28-16 to take the 81-70 victory.

The win puts the Lady Jets at 14-2 overall for the 2018-2019 season.

Sophomore forward Fatou Pouye led the Lady Jets’ offensive attack. She posted a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Sophomore center Bigue Sarr scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds and sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves added 15 points.

Both the Jets and Lady Jets return to conference play when they travel to Macon to take on Central Georgia Tech on Wednesday, January 2. The Lady Jets tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Jets at 7:30 p.m.
