AMERICUS — Morris Broughton Smith Jr. died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. A native of Americus, he was born Jan. 6, 1937, to the late Broughton and Evelyn Jennings Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired fire chief, 30 years of service with the Americus Fire Department, and was a member of First Baptist Church of Americus.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, at First Baptist Church of Americus with the Rev. Keith Parks, the Rev. Rusty Mauldin, Sammy Lee and Duane Montgomery officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. Honorary pallbearers include Thurston Clary, Stan Folsom, Scott Ivey, Doug Goodin, Scott Westbrook, and current and retired firefighters. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Willene Smith of Americus; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marci and Rick Langley of Albany, and Mandi and Mikel Mailhot of Buena Vista; a son, Morris B. “BoBo” Smith III of Ellaville; and a brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Dot Smith of Americus; four grandchildren, Ivy (Matt) Oliver of Ellaville, Addison (Jennifer) Walls of Americus, Becca Lane of Nashville, Tenn., and Chris Smith of Ellaville; step grandchildren, Drake Mailhot of Clearwater, Fla., and Jenna Mailhot-Taylor of Greenville, S.C.; four great-grandchildren, Lane Oliver and Riley Jean Walls, Mercer and Ben Taylor; two aunts Mrs. Hortense Williams of Jacksonville, Florida, and Mrs. Betty Moses of Peachtree City, Georgia; an uncle, Burr Wise Jennings of Americus; and a number of nieces and nephews.
