(Jan. 25-28)

• Firefighters responded to 19 calls for medical assistance.
• Firefighters responded to Post Way to a report of a structure fire. The occupant told then she plugged in her heater and awakened to a popping sound and noticed the outlet was on fire, which she extinguished with a shoe and a pan of water. No other hazards were found.
• Firefighters responded to South Lee Street to a report of smoke coming from a structure. On arrival, they found it was steam, not smoke.
• Firefighters responded to a traffic accident on East Lamar Street. A pickup truck was leaking a small amount of antifreeze.
• Firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire on Tom Hall Circle. Sumter County Fire & Rescue was scene on their arrival. There no fire but the oven had short circuited.
• Firefighters responded to a traffic accident on East Forsyth Street. No hazards were found.
• Firefighters responded to a traffic accident in Mayo Street. No hazards were found.
• Firefighters responded to a smoke detector activation on Crawford Street. They spoke with HVAC servicemen on scene who said lint burning off the heating unit had activated the detector.
• Firefighters responded to Mayo Street to a report of a possible structure fire. No hazards were found but it was determined that the concern was caused by vapor coming from the building’s exterior dryer vent.
• Firefighters responded to Mayo Street to a report of smoke coming from behind MRS Home Medical Store at 710 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The caller said there was a strong odor of smoke around and behind the business, as well as visible smoke in the area. No hazards were found.
• Firefighters responded to Clara Drive to a report of a structure fire. They extinguished a fire in the kitchen, and the area was overhauled. Sumter County Fire & Rescue provided mutual aid.
• Firefighters responded to Horne Street to a report of an odor of rotten eggs. The gas department was notified.
• Firefighters responded to a traffic accident on Sharon Drive.

• Firefighters responded to two calls for medical assistance.
• Firefighters responded to an alarm on South Hampton Street where the occupant was cooking and smoked up the house.
• Firefighters installed a smoke detector on Waterfront Drive.
• Firefighters responded to a traffic accident on Ga. Highway 30 West.
• Firefighters responded to Thomas Mill and Logan Store roads where they extinguished a cotton bale and grass fire.
• Firefighters responded to Ga. Highway 30 West to a structure fire “containing high explosives.” Sumter responded to 24 personnel and five pieces of large equipment while Webster County Fire responded with two personnel and a tanker. The fire took about an hour to bring under control.
