LAKE PARK — A weekend accident killed the press foreman of The Valdosta Daily Times and left his wife and a neighbor injured, according to the county sheriff.
Vince Cribb, vice president of production for The Times, was killed at his Lake Park home on Allison Lane Sunday afternoon, Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk said.
The sheriff’s office got a call about the accident at 4:26 p.m., the sheriff said.
“From what we know, it appears he was trying to repair a lawnmower in his shop,” Paulk said. “We think there may have been some welding going on. We don’t know if there were flammable liquids involved.”
A neighbor, Timothy Moore, ran into the burning building, grabbed Cribb, and tried to pull him out but was unsuccessful, the sheriff said. Moore suffered serious burns to his hands and face and had to be life-flighted to a hospital in Tallahassee, Fla., he said.
Cribb’s wife also suffered burned hands and was taken to South Georgia Medical Center, Paulk said. She is now at home with family members, he said.
Smoke inhalation has been ruled the cause of death, Lowndes County Coroner Austin Fiveash said.
Cribb had worked for The Valdosta Daily Times’ parent company since 1984, when the newspaper was owned by the former Thomson Newspapers Inc. He continued with the newspaper through a change of ownership to CNHI Inc. His father Edwin preceded him as The Times’ press foreman.
