Suspected gang member arrested

AMERICUS — A probationer was arrested earlier this week as part of an unannounced operation.
According to a press release from the Americus Police Department, at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, police officers joined with officers of the Georgia Department of Community Supervision to conduct unannounced compliance checks on individuals who are currently on probation and who have been identified as being validated or suspected gang members.
A compliance check on probationer, Anfranee Smothers, 23, at his residence in the 200 block of Wanda Way, Americus, resulted in his arrest on charges of possession of narcotics with intent to distribute, participation in criminal gang activity, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is incarcerated in the Sumter County Jail. Additional charges are pending completion of the investigation, according to authorities.
Authorities seized over 23 ounces of marijuana, prescription pain killers, two firearms, and over $3,900 in cash from Smothers’ residence.
