AMERICUS – South Georgia Tech Lady Jets sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves was selected as a member of the 2019 NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention Team by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 1 Women’s Basketball Committee.

Nieves helped lead the Lady Jets to their third consecutive NJCAA Division 1 National Tournament appearance. SGTC finished the season with a 30-4 overall record. It is the best overall record ever achieved by any SGTC men’s or women’s team in school history.

“The Lady Jets have won 30 games twice before, but this is the least amount of losses that we have had in a single season,” SGTC Athletic Director and women’s head basketball coach James Frey said. Frey attributed the Lady Jets’ successful season to a well-balanced team that included Nieves.

“We are so proud of Alyssa. This is well deserved,” Frey said. “She has had a tremendous season and she will be making a decision about where she plans to continue as a student-athlete in the next few weeks. She has been tremendous for us these past two years and she is going to be hard to replace.”

A native of Tampa, FL, Nieves set two school records this past season. She set a new school record for most points scored in a single game (41). Nieves also set a school record for most three-pointers in a single game (11). In that game, a 109-67 blowout win over Andrew College, she made 11 of 17 three-point attempts.

For the season, Nieves averaged 15.1 points per game to lead SGTC in scoring. She started and played in 30 games for the Lady Jets. During the season, she made 30 percent of her three-pointers and shot 43 percent from the field. Nieves also shot 80 percent from the foul line.
