AMERICUS – Georgia Southwestern State University Athletic Director Mike Leeder made an announcement on Thursday, May 2, that GSW men’s head basketball coach Ben Hicks has decided to step down from his position after three seasons.

Citing personal reasons, Hicks plans to pursue professional opportunities closer to his hometown of Phenix City, AL.

“We hate to see Ben go, but understand his intentions and motivation for moving on,” Leeder said. “I appreciate his commitment to the university over the years and the effort put forth towards meeting the vision of our department. His involvement in campus activities, the program’s dedication to community service and the effort he made to continue to improve the program are respected. We wish him and his family nothing but the best moving forward.”

“I would like to thank the administration at Georgia Southwestern for providing me with a wonderful community,” Hicks said. “There were many people at the university that contributed to my professional and personal development. I want to wish the GSW athletic department continued success in the future.”

A national search for a new head coach has begun.

“It is my expectation that the men’s basketball program at Georgia Southwestern should be able to compete for championships in the Peach Belt Conference,” Leeder said. “We will move quickly to identify a candidate who will continue our strong presence on campus and in the community, as well as elevate the program to meet the expectation of competitive success.”
