Jimmy Poole (K4VBH) of Americus and son Charles Poole (KE4KWF) of Atlanta were two of approximately 30,000 in attendance at the Dayton Hamvention last weekend. The world’s largest amateur radio gathering, held in Dayton, Ohio, attracts amateur radio operators (‘hams’) from across the globe. Sponsored by the Dayton Amateur Radio Association, this three-day annual event features seminars on the latest technological advances in communication, equipment manufacturer demonstrations, and an expansive “flea market” for pre-owned radio equipment. While in Ohio, they also visited the Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, Huffman Prairie Flying Field, Wright Brothers Memorial, Wright Bicycle Shop, The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, The Deeds Carillon, Cincinnati’s Fountain Square of WKRP in Cincinnati fame, and the Ohio State House in Columbus. Amateur radio operators remain ready to render substantial and needed communication services in times of emergencies.
