AMERICUS — Alton Clive Shell, age 86, of Americus, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, due to complications following a stroke. A native of Chapman, Ala., he was born March 1, 1933, to the late Vernon Clive and Anita Pearl Bass Shell. Mr. Shell was a legendary high school football coach at Americus High School as well as a veteran in the United States Army.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019, at First Baptist Church in Americus with the Rev. Keith Parks officiating. Burial will follow at Andersonville National Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2019, and from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug.  10, 2019, at Leanne Lankford’s residence, 1006 Turner St., Americus, as well as one hour prior to funeral service on Tuesday.

Survivors include three children, David Lankford, Leanne Lankford, and Karen Shell, all of Americus; a grandson, Will (Tonya) Lankford of Portage, Ind., and four great-grandchildren, Clive, Elijah, Isa, and Tobias. He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Sally Sykes Shell. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Alton Shell’s name to First Baptist Church, 221 S. Lee St., Americus GA 31709.
