AMERICUS — Three Americus-Sumter High School (ASHS) students recently attended a “mini” floral design clinic at Irwin County High School in Ocilla. Katelynn Donley, De’Angleo Tatum, and Thadeus Harris Jr. are members of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter at ASHS. They were escorted to the event by their sponsor, agriculture science teacher Ben Pope.

The students practiced preparing stems, leaves, and carnations for use in different types of floral arrangements including a nine-flower center piece, a vase arrangement, and a boutonnière.

Pope said they had a great time and enjoyed interacting with the other 48 students who were in attendance. “Events like this help students develop skills they can use in all aspects of their lives,” Pope said. He added, “And they love learning new things. The trip was definitely a huge success.”

Pope said one of these three students will be selected to compete in the FFA’s “Area Five Floral Design Career Development Event” on Sept. 24 at Brooks County High School in Quitman.
