  • Firefighters responded to 36 calls for medical assistance.
  • Firefighters responded to the report of a woodland fire on Pine Street. They found several small bushes on fire alongside a residential street. A neighbor offered his personal water hose to extinguish it.
  • Firefighters responded to Ridge Street to a report of a possible structure fire. They found a fire had been in the kitchen area but has been extinguished. They unplugged the stove and ventilated the structure of smoke. The home owner was advised to contact an electrician.
  • Firefighters responded to the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University to a report of a structure fire. They found a light haze of smoke and an electrical burning odor. A light ballast had overheated and shorted out.
  • Firefighters responded to Barbara Battle Way to a report of a possible structure fire. They found. They found a pot had been left on the stove. No other hazards were found.
  • Firefighters responded to a traffic accident on Montgomery Street.
  • Firefighters responded to an alarm on North Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. It was triggered by cooking.
  • Firefighters responded to a traffic accident on South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
  • Firefighters responded to Cartwright Road as automatic aid with Sumter County Fire & Rescue to a report of a structure fire. Home owner had been tearing down a mobile home and burning debris in a fire pit next to the trailer, and it spread to the trailer.
  • Firefighters responded to an alarm at Toboggan Steve’s, 102 W. Lamar St. It was a false alarm.
  • Firefighters responded to the report of a gas odor in the basement at Quality Inn, 1205 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Upon investigating the boiler room on the second floor, they found a burning odor and carbon monoxide readings. They found a hamper of rags and towels smoldering and they removed it and extinguished the fire.
  • Firefighters responded to Railroad Street to a report of an outside fire. They found small patches of burning debris in the area, which they extinguished.
  • Firefighters were dispatched to Starlight Circle but canceled in route.
  • Firefighters responded to South Georgia Tech Parkway to a semi-trailer truck fire. They found a truck pulled onto the shoulder with smoke coming from the passenger-side rear tires and a small fire around the rear brakes. They extinguished the fire and cooled the brakes. They determined the fire was the result of a rear wheel bearing failure.
  • Firefighters responded to a traffic accident on Varsity Drive.
  • Firefighters responded to a carbon monoxide alarm on South Lee Street. It was determined that the alarm had defective batteries.
  • Firefighters responded to the report of a structure fire on Mayo Street. The extinguished a small fire in the clothes dryer and removed smoke from the structure.
  • Firefighters responded to Lonnie Lane to a report of an odor. Nothing was found.
  • Firefighters responded to the Sumter County Health Department, 1601 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., to a report of a gas odor. The call was canceled in route. They responded again to the same location 15 minutes later to a report of a gas leak. Nothing was found.
  • Firefighters responded to an alarm South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard which was pulled due to a gas odor. Nothing was found.
  • Firefighters responded to the Griffin Bell Golf & Conference Center, 1800 S. Lee St., to an alarm. No hazards were found.
  • Firefighters responded to South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to a report of low hanging wires. They blocked traffic and removed one low hanging wire from the roadway. The cable company was contacted.
  • Firefighters responded to Chevron Food Mart, 1402 North Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., to an alarm but were canceled in route.
