Freshmen duo propels Lady Hurricanes to victory

ROME, GA – GSW freshmen Geraldine Alvarez and Payton Johnson scored goals in each half to lead the Georgia Southwestern State University women’s soccer team to a 2-1 road victory over Shorter University (SU) on Saturday, September 21, at Ben Brady Field on the SU campus.

In the 25th minute, Alvarez put the Lady Hurricanes (2-2-1) on the board first. Johnson followed suit in the 54th minute as she extended GSW’s lead with her second goal of the season. For the match, the Lady Hurricanes had a total of five shots on goal, including the two goals scored by Alvarez and Johnson. In contrast, GSW held the Lady Hawks to just three shots on goal.

GSW sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Morrone was eight minutes shy of recording her second-career clean sheet (shutout) as the Lady Hawks (0-5) managed to get a goal from Bianca Martins da Silva to avoid the shutout.

Up next for the Lady Hurricanes is a non-conference home game on Wednesday, September 25, against Talladega College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
