Raiders lose to Glenwood on Homecoming

AMERICUS — The Southland Academy Raiders hosted the Glenwood Academy Gators from Phenix City, Alabama, Friday night at Harvey Simpson Stadium for a non-GISA game. The students enjoyed an exciting week of Homecoming activities. At halftime, the Homecoming Court was recognized with senior, Emma Griffin, being crowned the 2019 Homecoming Queen. Her court included fellow seniors Maddy Copeland of Americus, Leslie Anne Farr of Americus, and Sarah Murphy of Americus. Junior representatives were Maddie Crisp of Americus and Alli Dent of Americus. Sophomore representatives were Lydia Anne Love of Americus and Ansley Weldon of Americus. Freshmen representatives were Ella Arnold of Americus and Morgan Weaver of Americus.

Kicker #10 Caleb Law got the Raiders on the scoreboard first with an impressive 45-yard field goal. With 54 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the Raiders lad 3-0. Glenwood responded on the next possession when #14 Daryl Monn scored on a 36-yard scamper. PAT was good and the Gators lead 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The Raiders found the end zone on the very next play to start the second quarter. Quarterback #11 Landon Law hit wide receiver #16 for a 76-yard TD pass. PAT by #10 Caleb Law was good and the Raiders regained the lead 10-7.

Glenwood answered with a long touchdown pass of its own with 10:41 left in the second quarter. Quarterback # 6, Bryce Newman, hit #20 Trevor Crisco for a 45-yard touchdown pass. PAT was good. Gators lead 14-10.

The Raiders continued to stand toe-to-toe with the Gators. The Raiders scored when fullback #52 Hunter McCain found the end zone with an 11-yard run.  The two-point attempt failed, but the Raiders led 16-14.

Southland’s #2 Adam Smith then came up with a big interception on Glenwood’s next possession at the Raider 30-yard line. The Raiders were unable to convert that turnover into points and had to punt.

Glenwood scored on a long 42-yard run by #9 Jackson Griner. PAT was blocked by line backer #52 McCain. With 4:24 left in second quarter, the Gators regained the lead 20-16.

Glenwood was able to score with just 14 seconds left in the half on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Newman to #1 Mason Hurd. PAT was good, and the Gators lead at halftime 27-16.

The Raiders opened the third quarter with an explosive play. Quarterback Landon Law ran the option to the left and made a perfect pitch to Clay Owens who took it 59 yards for a Southland touchdown. The two-point conversion failed making the score 27-22 Glenwood.

The Gators answered on the very next drive going 91 yards for the score and #14 Monn finished the drive with a 33-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion was good and the Gators led 35-22.

On the ensuing drive, the Gators were flagged for a late hit to quarterback Landon Law that gave the Raiders a first down inside Gator territory. Another flag gave the Raiders first and goal from the five-yard line. That was all Clay Owens needed as he scored his second touchdown of the game. PAT was not good leaving the score at Glenwood 35, Raiders 28.

The offenses continued to shine. Glenwood took its next drive and scored when #14 Monn raced up the middle for 21 yards. PAT was good, and the Gators lead 42-28 with 3:09 left in the third quarter.

Southland was forced to punt on their next drive. Glenwood would take the ball and score again. #7 Kyle Robichaux found the end zone with a one-yard run.  PAT was good with the Gators winning 49-28.

The Raiders will open region play against Brookwood at home Friday, Oct. 13. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
