Lady Hurricanes post best PBC finish in school history

LUMBERTON, NC – The Georgia Southwestern State University women’s cross country team (GSW) turned in its best Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship performance in program history by finishing in seventh place out of 12 schools at the 2019 PBC Championship meet on Saturday, October 26, at Luther Britt Park in Lumberton, NC.

GSW freshman Catherine Hall led the way for the Lady Hurricanes by finishing the race in a time of 20:30 to take 37th place out of 105 competitors. GSW placed three runners in the top half of the field.

Hall was the eighth fastest freshman to complete the course. Fellow GSW freshman Sarah Early was the second Lady Hurricane to cross the finish line. Early finished in 46th place in a time of 21:21. Junior Quincy Mayer was the third Lady Hurricane to cross the line. Mayer finished in 52nd place in a time of 21:26. Senior Connie Lewis posted the fastest time of her senior campaign, finishing in 23:09. Lewis barely edged out teammate Madaline Toth, who finished in a time of 23:28.

Sophomore Retchiel Roble finished strong with a time of 24:21. Sophomore Alex Exum followed in at 24:30 and sophomore Nathalie Maralunda ran her best time of the season at the PBC Championship (27:28).

Flagler College placed three runners in the top seven to finish with 40 points and won the team championship. The Lady Saints finished nine points ahead of second-place finishers North Georgia (49). In cross country, the objective is to finish with the least amount of points.

Augusta University’s Micah Weathers, the PBC Runner of the Year, won the race to take the individual championship in a time of 18:03.22.

The Lady Hurricanes will wrap up their season on Saturday, November 16, at the NCAA Division II Regional meet in Wingate, NC.
