AMERICUS – Three GSW Hurricanes scored in double figures to lead the Georgia Southwestern state University men’s basketball team to a 72-68 victory over Georgia College on Saturday, February 15, at the Storm Dome.

Jamari Dean posted a double-double to lead GSW. Dean scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. In addition to his production, Devon Higgs came off the bench to score 18 points and grab eight rebounds. Jalen Cameron was also in double figures with 12 points.

With the win, the Hurricanes have ended a seven-game losing streak, improving their overall record to 9-13 and 4-12 in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC).

In the first half, the Bobcats jumped out to a 17-11 lead, but the Hurricanes responded with a 9-0 run to take a three-point lead. This run was capped by a three-pointer from Cameron. GC responded with four unanswered points to take a 21-20 lead, but both teams would trade baskets over the remainder of the half, with the Hurricanes trailing only by three at 35-32 by halftime.

Early in the second half, the Hurricanes outscored the Bobcats 7-4 to take a 40-39 lead. Higgs capped off that run with a three-pointer at the 18:19 mark.

Over the next six and a half minutes, both teams traded baskets, but GSW would take a 50-47 lead with 11:18 to go on a basket by Dean.

There were several lead changes over the next five and a half minutes, but the Hurricanes took a 60-59 lead on a three-pointer by Josh Press with 5:34 to go in the game.

Over the next three and a half minutes, GSW extended its lead by going on a 7-0 run, but the Bobcats responded with six straight points to pull within two at 67-65 with 54 seconds to go. Then with 49 seconds left, the Bobcats pulled to within one at 69-68 when Brandon Thomas drilled a three-pointer.

Fortunately for GSW, that would be as close as GC would get. The Hurricanes got a free throw from Kahlon Whitley and two free throws from Soloman Thomas to secure the hard-fought victory.

Jordan Thomas led the Bobcats (10-14, 7-9 PBC) with 15 points.

The Hurricanes will try to continue their winning ways when they host Young Harris College on Sumter County Parks & Recreation Night at the Storm Dome on Wednesday, February 19. Tip off time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
