Local cancellations and closures due to COVID-19 precautions

City of Americus Offices: Mayor Blount states that all city offices will be closed to public access effective immediately.  He would like to encourage the use of available options for paying your city utility bills or other city bills which include online payments, mail, our drive thru location and our after hours drop box located at the Customer Service Center.  For all other inquires, please contact the City of Americus at the main number 229-924-4411 and someone will glad to assist you.

Sumter County Republican Convention:  Originally scheduled for March 21st has been cancelled.  They will be having a “virtual” meeting

Lake Blackshear Regional Regional Library:  will be closed beginning tomorrow March 17th and reopen March 31.  If you have library books at home, they are asking that you keep them.  Overdue fines will not be charged.  No need to renew any books either.

Sumter County Humane Society: suspending volunteer and community service hours until further notice.

Three’s Company Too:  Downtown-iversary Celebration is being postponed until a later date.  Please follow Three’s Company Too on Facebook for updates on a new date for their celebration.  The store is open and staff are working to keep the store sanitized for the safety of their patrons.

Municipal Court: cancelled as of March 16th for two weeks. Summons will be mailed out to all persons scheduled for court notifying them of their new court date.  Anyone with questions should contact the Clerk of Court at 229-924-3677.  Please contact the court if your mailing address has changed.  The business offices of the Police Department remain open for those needing copies of reports or other information.  We ask that inquiries not requiring face to face contact be made by phone.

Shamrock Jog and Jam: Scheduled for March 21st has been postponed until a later date.  Please follow the Jog and Jam Facebook page for updates on a new date and time.

Knights of Columbus Charity Golf Tournament:  Scheduled for March 28th has been postponed.

First Presbyterian Church of Americus  Will have worship only online via the radio (WISK 98.7) visit:  www.americusradio.com at 11:00am Sunday March 15th for worship services

Fabulous Feet Dance Studio will be closed March 16th through April 5th

Americus-Sumter March Madness Charity Basketball games scheduled for March 21st have been postponed until a later date based on Governor Kemp’s recommendation to suspend large event gatherings.  You can still make donations to help reach the goal of purchasing girls and boys rec team championship rings and boys and girls AAU sponsorships.  Donations can be made at the following:

Walmart Americus:  Until further notice, Walmart will be closing at 11:00pm each night and reopening at 6:00am each morning

Southland Academy:  Southland academy is closed as of March 16th through their Spring Break April 4th.

Rylander Theatre:  Downtown Americus. In an abundance of caution and with the health of our patrons, performers, and team members in mind the decision has been made to postpone all upcoming events at the Rylander Theatre effective immediately through March 27, 2020. The Sumter Players production of “Dreamgirls” will be rescheduled and an announcement will be made when a date is selected. At this time, refunds will be available beginning on Tuesday, March 17 at 11am for all “Dreamgirls” ticket holders who purchased tickets and did not receive complimentary membership tickets. North Carolina country duo, the Malpass Brothers, have been rescheduled for Friday, October 23. All current tickets sold for the March 20 concert will be valid for the new performance date.

Sumter County Chamber of Commerce:  Chamber Luncheon next Wednesday, March 18th. If you have already paid for your seat of table, the Chamber will be refunding your cost. Thank you for your interest and commitment to the Chamber.  We will reschedule Congressman Bishop, Jr. and Commissioner Black at another time. 

Girls Basketball Victory Parade:  The Sumter County School District has decided to postpone the Victory Parade/Community Celebration scheduled for March 16, 2020 based on Governor Kemp’s recommendation to suspend large event gatherings. We will reschedule this event for a later date.

Smarr and Smith Foundation Paint the Town Blue Gala: scheduled for March 21, 2020 is postponed until further notice.  Please follow The Smarr and Smith Facebook page for updates.

The Global Village & Discovery Center will be closed starting today until March 22. We will reopen March 23 unless things get worse.

Hot Glass Craft Beer Fest:  After much deliberation the Main Street Board of Directors and the Americus Hot Glass Craft Beer Festival Committee, have officially made the decision to postpone the upcoming April 4th event. Due to the increased measures of precaution for the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Please keep watch on the  Americus Hot Glass Craft Beer Facebook page and all the Downtown Americus – Main Street social media sites for updates. Rotary Club of Americus  All external meetings held on the Georgia Southwestern State University campus have been cancelled for the next two weeks. As a result, the weekly meetings of the Americus Rotary Club, scheduled for 3/14 and 3/24, are impacted. As of now, we plan to meet as usual on March 31 at 1 pm; however, Rotarians are asked to watch their emails for new developments moving forward.

South Georgia Technical College has made the decision to suspend classes and activities on all campuses and adult education sites beginning now through March 27th due to concerns resulting from the coronavirus (COVID-19), announced South Georgia Technical College President Dr. John Watford.  The only exception will be the high school dual enrollment classes in open K-12 school systems.  Faculty and staff are asked to report on Monday, March 16th.

Sumter County School District:  Will be closed Monday March 16th through Friday, March 27th.  Schools will reopen Monday, March 30, 2020.  Parents and guardians will be contacted through email, robo calls, and news media if there are any extensions beyond March 30th.

The Americus Kiwanis Club will not meet again until Friday, April 3.  They are postponing the 100 Year Gala previously scheduled for Saturday, March 28.
The Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast scheduled for Saturday, March 21, 2020, has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.  Ticket holders can redeem their tickets on the rescheduled date.
