AMERICUS – The COVID 19 Virus has engulfed the world. According to Johns Hopkins University, over 300,000 people around the world have been infected with this virus and there have been a total of 13,000 deaths worldwide.

The United States has not been spared by this virus and recently, it has struck Southwest Georgia. According to a report by WSB TV Channel 2 in Atlanta, Dougherty County has reported 45 cases and six deaths as a result of COVID 19.

The virus has also hit home here in Sumter County. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, as of Noon Sunday, March 22, there have been two confirmed cases of COVID 19 here in Sumter County.

As a result of this global pandemic hitting home, a local church decided to take action and beseech God on behalf of these people, as well as others in the county who may end up contracting the virus. On Saturday, March 21, at 8:30 p.m., several members of Lifepoint Church here in Americus formed a ring around Phoebe Sumter Medical Center as part of a prayer chain to pray for the doctors and the patients at the hospital.

“It effects us will see us through all and we’re a community of faith that stands on God’s Word and know and believe He will see us through,” said Lifepoint Church Senior Pastor Bud Womack. “We’re asking God to bless and protect all those who are sick and those who are taking care of those who are sick.”

Church members met at the hospital at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, and positioned their cars in the form of a ring around the hospital and prayed for the blessing and protection of the patients, as well as the doctors and nurses who were treating those patients.
