AMERICUS – The Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department (SCPRD) announced on Monday, March 30, that Spring Gymnastics and Adult Softball have both been cancelled due to concerns over the spread of the coronavirus.

SCPRD Director Tim Estes stated in a press release that the SCPRD is taking this action in order to be compliant with the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) regarding the practice of Social Distancing in an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

The spring activities to be cancelled are Spring B Session Gymnastics (Team and Recreation levels) and Adult Softball.

According to the SCPRD, refunds or credits will be issued upon request.

“Currently, all facility rentals have been cancelled and outdoor parks and playgrounds are closed until further notice,” said Estes. “The SCPRD will make a determination regarding the youth baseball season in the coming weeks.”

Estes went on to say that the SCPRD is continually monitoring the situation with help from the CDC, DPH and the Sumter County Board of Commissioners.

“We will provide updates as needed if additional adjustments are warranted,” said Estes. “Updates will be made available through local media outlets, social media and on the Sumter County Board of Commissioners website at www.sumtercountyga.us.”

Estes encourages anyone who may have specific program-related questions regarding the SCPRD to contact the SCPRD office at 229-924-4878.
