Marvin Leonard Horne, Junior (Sonny), age 66, passed away peacefully at home on April 7,2020.  He was the son of Marvin and Betty Horne and was born in Americus, Georgia on January 23, 1954. No plans for a service are being made at this time.

Sonny was raised in Rochelle and Americus, Georgia.  He has two sisters, Mrs. Calvin Starlin (Ginger) and Mrs. Rick Davis (Mary Kathryn). Other survivors include his daughter, Taylor Horne, and two sons, Brandon Horne (Meredith) and their children Eli and Kiley, and Bradley Horne (Kristi) and their children, Peyton and Hayden. Aside from his children and grandchildren, Sonny was also close to his nieces Brooks Starlin Melcher, Kathryn Lee Timmerman Lavender, Betty Morgan Davis Cooksey, and Rebekah Davis, and nephews Cody Timmerman and Ander Starlin.

Sonny was a member of the first graduating class from Southland Academy in 1972.  Afterwards he attended Georgia Southwestern College prior to beginning a long career in farming. Through this career he became a big part of the Smithville, Georgia farming community.  He also bred Beefmaster cattle and owned Star LP Gas Co. in Ashburn, Georgia and Still Gas Co. in Americus, Georgia.  He was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church in Smithville, Georgia and was a Sumter County Shriner.

Sonny loved the homeplace on his farm in Smithville and so enjoyed spending time there with all of his family. His favorite place to be was that farm with his family and friends.  He, and his sons, Brandon and Bradley, especially enjoyed hunting on the farm. Growing up Sonny also enjoyed horseback riding and competing in horse shows.  This skill he passed along to his daughter, Taylor, who currently shows horses.  Sonny was a lifelong University of Alabama football fan and was proud that all of children are as well!

Before he was confined to his home on Glessner Street, one could easily locate him during the week at Brownlee’s Grocery at breakfast time and Gladys’ Kitchen at lunchtime.  He also enjoyed visiting with friends on Wednesday nights at Pat’s Place.

A special acknowledgement and heartfelt thank you goes to the loving and skilled caregivers who provided wonderful care to Sonny in the last couple years of his life. Sonny was lovingly cared for in his last months by Brenda Roberts, Mary Smith and Casandra Jackson.
