Mrs. Nona Ruth Larsen

Mrs. Nona Ruth Larsen of DeSoto, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, just 8 days before her 104th birthday. She was preceded in death in 2002 by her husband of 66 years Elmer Larsen. Nona Ruth was born on July 9, 1916, in Sumter County to the late Albert and Ruth McDowell Deriso.

Graveside services were held on Friday, July 3, 2020 at 3:00 PM at the Leslie City cemetery with Rev. Wesley Kaylor officiating. Honorary Pallbearers were Al Deriso, Richard Deriso, Larry Deriso, Billy Deriso, Layne Lacy, and Stan Jones.

She is survived by son, Harry Larsen(Sue) of DeSoto and daughter Gail Larsen(Winton Harris) of Tucker, GA., grandson George Larsen II(Lynn) of DeSoto, great grand-daughter, Ada Ruth Larsen, and seven nephews.

She was preceded in death by brother John Deriso and sister Nelcine Deriso Lacy.

She graduated from Union High School in Leslie in 1933 and from Americus Business College 2 years later. She was the oldest living graduate of Union High School until her death.

She assisted with many of the farm operations, but her main job was keeping the farm books. After Mr. Larsen retired from farming, she worked with him in his public fishing business.  When the county needed a bus driver for a short route, she filled the position. Flower gardening, canning and freezing vegetables from the garden filled the summers.

Her memberships included the Extension Service Homemakers club, the Sewing Club, P.T.A., Setback club, Leslie United Methodist church and the WMU, holding leadership positions in all these organizations. She enjoyed being a room mother for 16 years, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. In 2018, she was honored by the NWV District of United Methodist Women as being chosen the Quiet Disciple from Leslie United Methodist Church.

The family suggests memorial contributions to be made to Leslie United Methodist Church, 111 E Allen St. Leslie, GA. 31764.
