Mayor Lee Kinnamon proclaimed Wednesday July 17th Vote for Phoebe Sumter Medical Center Day. The hospital is one of twenty nominees for a contest by Soliant Health for the most beautiful hospital in the United States.

Carlyle Walton, CEO of Phoebe Sumter, addressed those gathered in the foyer. “This is truly an opportunity for us to all demonstrate our community pride, and I will readily acknowledge that I am biased, because I have the privilege every day of working with the most beautiful team on what I consider, in my now 32-year healthcare career, the most beautiful campus.” Walton encouraged citizens to vote for the hospital online.

Kinnamon addressed those gathered. “I know that you will agree with me no one wants to have to come to the hospital. You get to see us when we’re at our worst, unfortunately. But when we do have to come here, which we all do, at some point, typically, when we do have to come here, the good news is that it’s a beautiful place and that you are surrounded by what I believe to be a beautiful staff of people who care deeply about wellness in the truest sense of that word.”

He thanked Walton, hospital staff, and Marcus Johnson, director of marketing and PR for Phoebe Sumter, before reading the proclamation, which declared July 17th Vote for Phoebe Sumter Medical Center Day. He spoke of Phoebe Sumter’s reopening in a new facility on December 16th, 2011, after the devastation of an EF3 tornado on March 1rst, 2007 at the old facility. The proclamation also noted the extensiveness of the new facility, with 76 beds, and with more 680 employees.

Kinnamon also told of the variety of services, including acute care, bariatrics, general surgery, orthopedics, hospice care, cardiology, emergency care, among others.

He concluded; “Whereas Phoebe Sumter Medical Center achieved the title of the most beautiful hospital in the United States in 2015 and seeks to reclaim that title and bring it back to Americus and Sumter County in 2024, now therefore I Lee Kinnamon, Mayor of the City of Americus, along with the City Council declare Wednesday July 17th, 2024, as vote for Phoebe Sumter Medical Center Day in Americus, and encourage all citizens to cast their votes for Phoebe Sumter as the most beautiful hospital in the United States.”
