The Sumter County High School Softball Team (SCHS) scored 14 runs on six hits in the top of the third inning and took advantage of nine walks and a hit batsman on their way to a 17-4 season-opening victory over Carver on Tuesday, August 6 at Carver High School in Columbus.

The Panthers got RBI hits from Isis Snipes, Christina Battle and Lanajah Stewart and both Snipes and Battle, along with Madison Shelton, Tadaisha Aldridge and Kamiyah Barron, drew walks that ended up scoring runs. Alasia Colwell also drove in a run when she was hit by a pitch.

Shelton got the start in the circle for the Panthers. She gave up four runs, walked six batters and struck out five.

Carver opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Panthers scored three runs in the top of the second on three hits. The big blow of the inning came off the bat of Candace Pitts, who drove in two runs on an RBI triple.

The Panthers will try to raise their record to 2-0 when they travel down to Albany on Thursday to take on Monroe. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
