It was a tough and difficult outing for the Schley County Wildcats (SCHS) on Tuesday, as they were handed a 20-6 loss by Lee County at Wildcat Park.
The Wildcats were hurt largely in part by six errors that were committed in the ball game.
SCHS got off to a good start in the bottom of the first inning, as they scored three runs on two RBI doubles by Kali Bishop and Abby Cheek.
However, the Trojans responded with five runs on five hits in the top of the second. Makinley Duke would then tie the game at 3-3 on an RBI single to left field. After Jaylyn Purvis drew a walk off SCHS starting pitcher Summer Smith, Christina Benton drove in two runs on an RBI single to right field.
The Trojans added two more runs in the top of the third to take a 7-3 lead, but the Wildcats countered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Dixie Justice was able to steal home and Abby Cheek doubled in a run on an RBI double.
The Trojans continued to add to their lead, as they scored a run in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, but the big blow came in the top of the seventh inning, as LC exploded for nine runs on six hits and took advantage of two errors, two walks and two hit batsmen.
Down 20-5, the Wildcats tried to mount a comeback, as Dixie Justice belted a lead off home run, but that was all the Wildcats could muster, as the Trojans would go on to win 20-6.
Justice and Abby Cheek each went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Wildcats’ offense. Justice drove in a run on the home run and scored a total of three runs, while Cheek drove in two RBIs.
Summer Smith got the start in the circle for SCHS and took the loss. In four innings of work, she gave up 15 runs on 14 hits (Only four of those runs were earned) with three walks and two strikeouts. Laney Dew came on in relief of Smith. In three innings of work, she gave up five runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
