A concert was held at the Plains high school on October 1 honoring President Carter’s 100th birthday.

Singer songwriter Andrew Greer, winner of Multiple Dove awards, gave welcoming remarks. In addition to Greer, the musicians included 5-time Grammy Award winner Sandi Patty, pianist David Osbourne who has performed before multiple presidents, Singer-song writer and multiple Dove Award winner Cindy Morgan, and singer song writer Brent Cobb, who has performed with popular artists such as Miranda Lambert.

A video with various notables wishing President Carter happy birthday was shown. Contributors included musicians and politicians such as President Biden.

Jimmy Carter Leadership students from Georgia Southwestern volunteered to help with the concert, and the Southwest Civic Chorus/ Georgia Southwestern Concert Choir also performed.

Kim Fuller, executive director of the Friends of Jimmy Carter National Historic Park and niece of Jimmy Carter, addressed the audience. “I want to thank you for being here tonight, to honor a man who has lived 100 years of a life well lived.”

Congressman Sanford Bishop also made an address, speaking of working with President Carter. “In a time of heightened partisanship, the love and respect that Jimmy Carter has earned transcends any democrat republican, conservative and liberal divide.” He told how the compassionate service of Carter was a personal inspiration. “I introduced a bi-partisan bill a few weeks ago to award President Carter the Congressional Gold Medal. I introduced it with my colleague of the neighboring eighth Congressional District, my friend Austin Scott, a conservative Republican, who was joined in the effort by Congressman Donald Norcross of New Jersey, a democrat, who reached out to me in this regard because of how inspirational and influential President Carter was in his life.”

Musicians and attendees sang happy birthday to Jimmy Carter, who was listening by phone. Greer and Morgan performed Butterfly, Fly, a song they had co-written in honor of Rosalynn Carter’s 95th birthday. Patty sang What a Wonderful World. Cobb sang South of Atlanta and Keep ‘Em On They Toes, and Greer and Morgan sang A Starry Crown, a song they had written to honor President Carter’s legacy.
