Board of Education announces town hall meeting to hear citizen input on fate of old high school

The Sumter County Board of Education met October 10. Superintendent Walter Knighton reported to the Board. “Our SPLOST collection for the month of September is $468,033.84, our Georgia Power bill, $60,997.95, we don’t have any bills that were recorded for Sumter EMC for this particular month of September.” He noted they had not come in yet. “Water sewer and sanitation, for the month of September is $20,770.25. City of Americus energy bill for September: $2,179.46. Cellular phone bill: $2,311.39.” He gave the millage rate for 2024 as 18.057. He gave the budget as $54,323,288.
School Board member Rick Barnes made a motion. “I make a motion to approve the recommendation of the superintendent for the repairs to the kitchen roof of Sumter County Primary School not to exceed $350,000 to be funded from SPLOST.”
School board member Carolyn Hamilton seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Knighton made announcements. “At this time, I would like to announce that on Wednesday, October the 16th, 2024, the report cards for the district will go out. We’re also excited to be able to host our Japanese delegation starting on October the 19th to the 23rd of 2024.”
On November 18, the Sumter County Board of Education will hold a town hall meeting in the gym of the old high school at 805 Harold Avenue 31709. The event will allow citizens to give input on what the old Highschool should be used for. There will be ten slots for speakers, and those wishing to register should arrive at 5:30 pm. Each speaker will be allowed 5 minutes. Those merely wishing to listen should arrive at 6 pm.
